![]() These relationships hold transformative power. We all need someone to come and throw their cloak around us we all need spiritual mentors, spiritual fathers and mothers. He is someone new now because of God’s call on his life. When Elisha says goodbye and throws this big BBQ, he’s essentially participating in his own funeral. His life was forever altered by the presence of Elijah. Elisha’s life was so transformed by the call of Elijah that he leaves his family, he slaughters his oxen, and he burns his plowing equipment. Think of this cloak as a symbol of what Elisha’s life would become. Let me teach you.” Elijah is calling Elisha to join him in prophetic ministry. By putting his cloak around Elisha, Elijah is saying, “Follow me. Other translations use “mantle”.Ĭloak or mantle – it’s an outer garment, but it’s much more. This cloak is going to be a significant factor in Elijah’s relationship with Elisha. The prophet walks up to him and casts his cloak on Elisha. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.Įlisha is plowing w/ 12 yoke of oxen that’s not a small number of animals. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. “What have I done to you?”Ģ1 So Elisha left him and went back. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,” he said, “and then I will come with you.” 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. That’s where we pick up the story.ġ9 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. Carmel, God tells Elijah to go and anoint Elisha to serve as the next prophet for God. To tell this story, we’re going to look at two Scriptures. Today, we’re going to look at Elijah / Elisha. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going away to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am.” Explain how the Elisha would stop at the Shunammite’s house while passing through, but Jesus has prepared a place for us in Heaven to live with him forever.In our study of the Story, we’re seeing that God seems really fond of mentoring relationships: Moses / Joshua Naomi / Ruth later on, we’ll see Paul / Timothy. Think about how Jesus words in John 14:2-3, “In My Father’s house are many rooms. Could you invite someone round for a meal? Care for someone who is unwell? Think about some practical ways you can support to another Christian. Firstly, by providing food for Elisha and then by building a room for him. Explain how they saw a need and went out of their way to meet it. Share how Jesus has paid a debt that we could never pay ourselves.Ĭontinue to read 2 Kings 4 and the account of the Shunammite’s women and a room for Elisha. Show how without a miracle, she could not pay the debt. Share how God did a miracle by not allowing the widow’s oil to run out.Įxplain how the widow needed the money to pay a debt. Try to guess how many containers you can fill before the jug is empty. Collect some contains from around your home and a jug of water. Explain how oil was very precious in Bible times. Place a little olive oil in your child’s hand for them to feel and smell. Read the account on Elisha and the widow’s oil from 2 Kings 4:1-7. Think of some of the ways God uses your family. Thank God for the ways He blessing them already. Pray for your child, thank God for the ways He blesses you and ask Him to bless and be with your child. Share how before Elijah was taken to heaven, he prayed that Elisha would have a double blessing. Think about some of the people God puts in our lives to help us grow. ![]() Thank your child for the ways they help you practically and help you learn new things. Reflect on how it can be hard to leave things behind, but how Jesus loved us to so much, he came from Heaven to Earth to save us.Įxplain how Elijah helped Elisha, and Elisha helped Elijah. If your church supports a missionary, you could explain how they left their home to follow Jesus somewhere else. Think about the disciple in the New Testament who left things behind to follow Jesus. Elisha was busy working in the field, but he left everything behind to obey God. Speak to your child about how we respond to helping others and serving God. Remind your child how God told him to anoint Elisha and that Elisha became Elijah’s helper. Begin by reviewing last week’s lesson on Elijah.
